Interview:
In your own words, please talk
about the two main characters in your comic and what they're
all about.
The book centers around the duo of Cassie Hack and her
partner Vlad. Cassie Hack grew up in a small town in western
Wisconsin. Her father left when she was young, and she was
raised by her increasingly eccentric mother, who worked as
the lunch lady at her high school. Always an outsider,
Cassandra grew into a bitter and sarcastic young woman,
considered a freak and a nerd by her classmates.
When Cassie was a junior in high school, students began
disappearing. Most of these students were those that had
mistreated Cassie at one time or another. Concurrently,
school lunches began becoming more extravagant, as a
delicious new "mystery meat" was added to the menu.
Eventually, it was discovered that Cassie’s mother, the
Lunch Lady was killing and cooking the students for
consumption. The Lunch Lady was cornered, and took her own
life by sticking her head into a pot of boiling water.
Two years later, students at Cassie’s new school again began
disappearing. The vengeful Lunch Lady had returned, as a
slasher, an undead murderer driven to continue it's
murderous spree. After a ghastly battle, Cassie managed to
“destroy” the Lunch Lady. Driven by guilt, and lacking any
connection to anyone, Cassie went on the road, seeking out
Slashers and stopping their rampages wherever she could.
Eventually she met up with Vlad, a bad ass warrior mutant
guy who she mistook for a slasher.
Based on your comic and some
of the dialogue, I'm guessing you're a fan of the slasher
genre. What were some of your favorites growing up?
Oh yeah…I really only got hardcore into horror in my teens.
Before that, I was just too affected by it to watch it. But,
as I got older and more twisted I fell in love. My faves
growing up were Halloween, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play,
Nightmare…the classics really. But mostly, I was obsessed
with the Evil Dead series, which is only peripherally a
slasher series.
Which elements of those films
did you bring over to the Hack/Slash comic?
I wanted H/S to have the feel and fun of an “Up All Night’
Movie, or something from a Joe Bib Briggs critic’s pick.
I’ve always been more of a fan of funny horror. I like
creative death scenes, I like tongue in cheek
characters..but I like real scares too. So, I’ve tried to
grab all those elements and add good characters to make
something new.
So let's talk about the sexy
Cassie Hack. Has she ever appeared nude in your comics? Does
Cassie have anything against gratuitous nudity?
Haha. No..she’s never been nude in the comics. She’s not
that kind of character. If I show you the bod, the mystery
is over! Plus, I think part of the appeal of the character
is that she’s not just a hot chick…if I have to go all out
and show ya all her bits, that means I didn’t spend enough
time on her character! Or something….
Tell us something about Cassie that we don't know.
She’ll have less digits by the end of the first issue of the
ongoing series.
I was curious about this; do you
think Vlad could take Jason Voorhees?
Well, in a straight hand-to-hand, Jason wins. The guy is an
unstoppable lightning resurrected zombie! But, Vlad is a lot
smarter. He could outsmart Jason..lead him into a wood
chipper or something.
Out of all of HACK/SLASH's
adventures, do you have a personal favorite?
I think Hack/Slash vs. Chucky is my new favorite. But, for
the longest time, Girls Gone Dead was my #1.
I wanted to touch upon the movie
adaptation of HACK/SLASH. Where's that at right now? Have
they started production?
They’re tightening up the final draft of the script I
believe. The director has started doing waaay
pre-production…drawings and designs and such.
Have they cast the roles of
Cassie and Vlad yet?
Nope. You’ll know when they do, cuz I’ll tell EVERYONE.
Can you give us the skinny on
the storyline?
It’s TOP SECRET!
How involved are you with the
project Tim?
I talk to the producers and the director on a nearly daily
basis…just batting around ideas and news. Todd Lincoln
(director) is really cool about making sure he knows what I
think, even when I think he’ll know better than my comic
making ass.
If you could make your film
exactly how you wanted, you know, before producers get their
grubby hands in there. What would the film be like?
Haha…well, fortunately, in my case, it’s a good thing others
have their hands in it. If left TOTALLY up to me, I’d
probably make something that looked like it was made in
1986, with lots of silly gore and boobs. It’d be an homage
to Evil Dead 2, Sleepaway Camp and Trick Or Treat…and the
only person who’d watch it is me. The producers know what
has to be done to make a film that appeals to modern
audiences. So they’re taking what’s in the comic and adding
a bigger scope.
What else is out there that
you've done Tim? When fans read all of HACK/SLASH what do
they pick up next?
LOADED BIBLE from Image comics is my Jesus vs. Vampires
comic. Check that out! I also draw a lot of stuff for
Devils’ Due Publishing, like FORGOTTEN REALMS and G.I.Joe.
Have you seen any good horror
movies recently?
Yes! I finally saw MANIAC COP, a little gem which I had
somehow missed. Campbell AND Tom Atkins!! I also loved
FEAST. And, I’m heading out to see THE HOST tomorrow night,
which I’ll probably love.
So what are you working on now?
In the middle of Hack/Slash Ongoing issue 5. We work a bit
ahead.
One last question. Would it be
at all possible for you to send me a pair of Cassie's
panties? There not for me, but a friend.
Cassie keeps those under pretty tight wraps. But, I have a
line on a pair of Vlad’s slightly used tighty whiteys in
your friend isn’t picky.
